Duke student wins first prize from Pulitzer Center
The Pulitzer Center recognized Duke student, Laila Zak, as the first place young adult contest winner in the Human Rights category. Below are two excerpts from her piece, “When I think of Border Crossings.”

When I think of border crossings,
no quiero pensar en los agentes, depredadores
driving women and men, all inalienable
people, into vans with tinted windows—
brutal portals to a system in which too many disappear.
Where is the sensor that will detect their heartbeats?
Where are the heat-sensing cameras that will tell us where they are?
…
When I think of border crossings,
I think of the neighborhood patrols, shoestring activists
at the front lines, luchando con coraje y compasión
that blaze from Chicago to Charlotte to Minneapolis
to ease the cold. In spite of the billions of dollars and
technological warheads spent on stopping our movement,
todavía logramos florecer.

Cuando pienso en los cruces fronterizos,
no quiero pensar en los agentes, depredadores
que llevan a mujeres y hombres, todos ellos personas con derechos inalienables
portales brutales hacia un sistema en el que demasiadas personas desaparecen.
¿Dónde está el sensor que detectará sus latidos?
¿Dónde están las cámaras térmicas que nos dirán dónde están?
…
Cuando pienso en los cruces fronterizos,
pienso en las patrullas vecinales, en los activistas con recursos limitados
en primera línea, luchando con coraje y compasión
que se extienden desde Chicago hasta Charlotte y Minneapolis
para aliviar el frío. A pesar de los miles de millones de dólares y
las armas tecnológicas que se gastan para detener nuestro movimiento,
aún logramos florecer.
